Judgment has Fallen

Enforcer HQ

Wallace entered the barracks floor, as they’d taken to calling the ninth floor of Enforcer HQ, where most of the cops, now Valerie’s soldiers, had been set up with rooms. Some had families and returned home each night, but those who didn’t were asked to stay here in case they were needed for defense.

He walked down the hallway and nodded to the cop on duty, seated behind a desk. The guard was the only one inside wearing his police cap, so you knew he was on duty. Although Valerie had taken to referring to them as her army, it was easier all around to still call them cops, or police officers, since that’s the uniform they all wore. He was still hopeful she wouldn’t change that—for him, the uniform was a grand tradition, and held certain levels of prestige.

“Any sign of her yet?” Wallace asked, glancing at the cop’s name to remind himself. “Buland?”

Buland just shook his head. “They said you’d be by to ask, and that if you did, to watch my back.”

“And why’s that?” Wallace asked with a frown. He didn’t consider himself harsh, or someone known for losing his temper.

“You never seem to like the answer, and now with your friends in power….”

“Hey, I just want to make sure that if anyone hears anything about Ella, I’m the first to know.” He folded his arms, very cognizant of the couple of heads that had poked out of doors. After a moment, he said, “So, nothing?”

“Nothing.” Buland glared. “As I said.”

“Right.” He was about to go and leave it at that, but then paused and turned back to the man. “You do realize I’m in charge here?”

“If you have to say it, maybe it’s not as true as you think.”

“The hell’s that supposed to mean?”

Buland raised an eyebrow, glancing behind him at the others who’d exited from their rooms and were standing by with curiosity. “We’ve been hearing things, right guys?”

The others shrugged while one shook his head but avoided Wallace’s gaze.

“Now might be a good time to tell me these things,” Wallace said.

“Come on, Wallace. You were a street cop, right?” Buland stood now, hand on his arc rod, as if Wallace might attack him for what he was saying. He had to admit, a part of him certainly wanted to. “A sergeant, right? And now you’re suddenly in charge here, because she says so?”

He felt his cheeks flushing with anger. Where the hell had this talk been a week ago when everything was falling apart around them, when Strake’s armies were invading, and when they were fighting the vampires and Nosferatu? They were cowering behind his leadership, that’s where.

“Who’s got a problem with it?” he asked.

“Top brass,” Buland said. “I’m not saying I’m with you or against you, but let’s be honest. We serve the uniform, which means we have no choice but to follow rank.” (more…)

Judgment has Fallen

Post-Apocalyptic Attempt at a Dive Bar, Old Manhattan

Sandra glanced over her shoulder through a window, wondering if she’d really just seen Valerie running across a rooftop and then disappearing over its side.

No, she had to have imagined it.

“What is it?” Diego said, moving to the window beside her and gazing out. He shrugged and smiled back at her. “Looking to see shapes in the clouds? That one looks kind of like a snake, right?”

“Huh?” she glanced back out and saw what he was talking about. Though, if you considered the sunlight at its tip, she could almost see it as something more humorous, and laughed.

Then he saw it too, and rolled his eyes. “Let’s stick with snake.”

“Call them whatever you want,” she said. “That one’s pissing sunlight all over us.”

“You know, you’ve gotten weirder lately.” He made his move by sliding a little wooden play piece across the board, and smiled. “Usually I like it.”

“Just not when it involves clouds that look like man-parts?”

He laughed. “No, I guess even then, too. Your turn.” (more…)

Valerie paced before her window, shoulders tight with worry, as she watched Diego and Cammie walk off. Sandra stood rigid, arms crossed protectively in front of her, looking like someone had kicked her puppy. Ella had reported in with her brother Peterson, and his cop partner, Wallace.

“I want the city walls up at all times,” Valerie commanded. “Day and night, got that?”

Ella nodded, but held up a hand of caution. “Just… what exactly should we tell the people of the city?”

Valerie looked at the former Enforcer, now wearing a cop uniform like her brother, and smiled. One who asks questions and thinks about repercussions, she liked that.

“Excuse my lack of knowledge about how the city works.” Valerie paced and then stopped. She looked out to the west, where she could see the edges of the city. Or, at least where the working city met what she’d begun to term the dead city. That’s where the walls went up, only at nights, until now. “What is it we currently tell the citizens of Old Manhattan?”

Ella shared a look with Wallace that said she wasn’t sure, so Wallace stepped up.

“Mostly we blame it on the wackos and nomads.” He had a way of glancing at Ella every once in awhile and did that now with a nervous smile. “Mostly we just enforce it, don’t really bother with what they know, because honestly… we didn’t know.”

“I had a hint of an idea,” Ella said. “I mean, I knew about the Weres and the hunting, so put two and two together.

“And she didn’t tell you any of this?” Valerie asked Wallace. “In spite of your… situation?”

He blushed, giving it away—she’d guessed right. Those looks were the type lovers shared. (more…)

unnamed-5Enforcers HQ (Ch 2 Continued)

When the elevator doors had closed behind them and smoothly began its ascent, she shook her head and sighed.

Valerie looked over at the male Were, “You get any rest yet?” she asked.

“I can rest when you rest.” He had his hands in his pocket and gave her a wry smile. “You think you’re so tough, now that you can walk in the sunlight?”

She smiled back. “Yes.”

He laughed, then did his best to stifle a yawn.

She pointed at him, “Caught you!” she smirked.

“Seriously, I’m damn tired.” he turned away, but paused, glancing back at her. “After what you went through, how are you not collapsed somewhere asleep right now?”

“Michael, the vampire I told you about….” She watched the number change, thinking about what had happened with the legendary vampire. “I imagine it was just a temporary boost, but I’m telling you, I feel more alive than I ever have.” (more…)
